ESU 53900 – ESU Decoder Tester

This is the scenario you may well be familiar with: you’ve got a digital decoder sitting on your workbench and you want to test it before to an installation (which is perhaps complex). But how do you achieve this?

Well this decoder tester solves your problem. Simply connect the decoder tester to your DCC command station or a LokProgrammer, it enables you to test any decoder (any brand) without exposing it to any external factors caused by a locomotive that may influence its performance. Think of it as a test bed locomotive in which case you know it will be reliable, and free of any faults, because the board is solid and connected directly to your command station or LokProgrammer.

Think of it as a test bed locomotive in which case you know it will be reliable, and free of any faults, because the board is solid and connected directly to your command station or LokProgrammer.

In order to make things as convenient as possible for you, the ESU Decoder Tester is equipped with some extremely useful features. It has all of the commonly used interfaces for connecting any decoder for the smaller scale models, and an expansion board is available to test the larger scale decoders such as the LokSound L & XL with pin headers.

The decoder tester is populated with the following: an NEM 651 (6-pin socket), NEM 652 (8-pin) socket, NEM 660 (21MTC) header pins, NEM 658 (Plux12/16/22) header, NEM 662 (Next-18) socket, along with ESU’s new and unique ‘E24’ connector for their LokSound Nano decoders, plus the board has a bank of screw terminals so that wired decoders and the larger scale LokSound L & XL (with screw terminals) decoders can be wired to test. No matter the type of decoder you have, there’s an appropriate matching interface waiting for you to connect your decoder into.

A quality coreless motor with flywheel serves in conjunction with LEDs indicating the direction for checking the motor output: Thus it is quite easy to check on the low speed performance and the even speed of the decoder. An LED monitor informs you about the functioning of the headlights, tail lights as well as the function outputs AUX1 through AUX6. Two green track power LED’s indicate track power supply, which also doubles as an activity monitor when programming decoders through your command station or the LokProgrammer.

For testing LokSound and other sound decoders we have integrated a 20 mm speaker rated at 8 Ohm, 1 Watt. You have a choice of using the integrated speaker at 8 Ohm, 100 Ohm or switched off using the slider switch – thus the Decoder Tester is perfectly suitable for any ESU decoder generation!
