Motor rewinds and re-mag service
Is your motor giving you trouble? Look out for these signs: darkened armature wire, overheating coils, lack of power and sparks flying from brushes.
Don’t let a worn-out motor slow you down! Our motor armature rewinding service is here to save the day. Say goodbye to the hassle of searching for a hard-to-find replacement motor. Trust us to bring your motor back to life!
Introduction to our rewind and re-mag service
Mark’s Trains offers a specialized service in rewinding motor armatures. Instead of going through the hassle of searching for a hard-to-find replacement motor, we can help you by rewinding your existing motor to restore its functionality. We understand the importance of having a properly functioning motor, and our team is dedicated to ensuring that your motor is rewound to the highest standards. We can also re-magnetise stator magnets using our specialist equipment.
What is a motor armature rewind
A motor armature rewind is the process of removing the existing faulty field coil windings and replacing them with new coil windings. The process initially starts with disassembling the motor and investigating the underlying cause of the motor issue, which could be a damaged commutator or failed coil windings – open or short circuits. The armature is tested to identify these faults before the rewinding process begins.
With diagnostics complete the armature is stripped of the old coil windings and then cleaned with a wire brush to remove rust. The bare rotor is then treated with an anti-rusting solution or specialist insulating material. Rewinding is done on a special winding machine for optimal results, which gives a tight even wind. An exchange armature must be supplied, in most cases, we will rewind your original armature.
The commutator could be badly glazed by using too much lubrication over time, where the oil is vaporized and baked to the commutator surface. This greatly lowers the performance of the motor and increases resistance between the brushes and commutator putting strain on the field coils.
In cases of prolonged use in this condition severe damage could occur to the commutator such as pitting and uneven wear patterns, subsequently requiring a replacement commutator or major rework. The commutator should be clean and shiny for optimal performance, so our experts will degrease and deglaze the commutator ready to receive the new coil leads. The gap between the segments will also be cleaned of any material build-up.
Finally the motor is reassembled, the brushes are cleaned or replaced and tested for correct operation. The stator magnet is tested to measure its flux density and re-magnetised if needed at extra cost.
Signs that your motor needs a rewind
There are several signs that indicate your motor may require a rewind. One common indicator is when the armature wire appears dark in colour, which could be a result of wear and tear over time.
Additionally, if you notice that the coils or motor are getting hot during operation and slowing down after a few minutes, or if there are lots of sparks coming from the brushes, it may be time to consider rewinding the motor.
These issues can lead to further damage if not addressed promptly. It is therefore important to regularly service and inspect your motors to elongate the service life, and to address problems as soon as they surface before serious damage takes place.
Why choose a motor armature rewind service
By using our rewinding service, you can prolong the lifespan of your motor and avoid the cost of purchasing a new one. It is also better for the environment to repair an existing motor armature rather than discarding it and purchasing a replacement.
Our team of experts have the knowledge and experience to effectively rewind motors of all types. We use high-quality materials and advanced techniques to ensure that the rewinding process is done effectively with the correct number of windings and tension.
One of the advantages of choosing a professional rewind service over attempting to rewind the motor yourself (or finding a replacement) is that the full amount of turns for each coil is achieved at the correct tension and pitch width ensuring no hot spots and optimal motor efficiency.
With our expertise, you can trust that your motor will be restored to optimal performance, saving you time and money in the long run. Don’t let motor issues slow you down – contact us today to learn more about how we can help you with your motor rewinding needs.
